Muraho! Annyeong haseyo! Ciao! (Hello)

My name is Levi Benjamin Clay Rokey. Otherwise known as “Lewi” (LAY-wee) in the Rwandan village I lived in from 2018-2020. I’m a returned Peace Corps Volunteer who taught English to secondary-level (middle school) students in northern Rwanda.

I recently completed my studies at The American University of Rome, obtaining a Master of Arts in Food Studies: Sustainable Policies for Production and Consumption. My thesis focused on South Korean rural development policy supporting the generational sustainability of agriculture. I am currently looking for consulting opportunities in sustainable agriculture and global food systems.

After the Peace Corps worldwide evacuation in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I moved to Busan, Korea, where I lived for one year teaching elementary and middle school students English at a private academy. In Korean, Levi = 리바이.

Before joining the Peace Corps and embarking on this demi-decade career change, I lived in Washington, D.C. for seven years, building an amazing karass of friends via founding the Exploratory Committee of Crawls and Shenanigans (ECOCAS). I also worked in public relations for ten years, helping private and public sector clients to analyze print, online, social, and broadcast media. Essentially, I read the news for a living.

In my spare time, I love gardening, cooking, eating local cuisine, reading anything food/politics/music/world/culture-related, and spending as much time outdoors as possible.

I’ll leave you with this quote from my favorite author, Kurt Vonnegut, from his first novel, Player Piano, released in 1952: “I want to stay as close on the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge, you see all kinds of things you can’t see from the center. Big, undreamed-of things — the people on the edge see them first.”
